Hi, My name is Emerald. I’m the daughter of Rebecca Shelley, R.D. Henham’s assistant, who put together all of Sindri’s notes to write The Red Dragon Codex. I live with my mom at the Great Library in Palanthas. My mom thinks books are the best things in the world, and there sure are a lot of them here in the library. Want to come see them? Well, for those who live too far away, or in another world entirely, I’m going to keep this blog to tell about my life here, how we make books, and what it’s like living with an author for a mother. April 2, 2008 My mom finished writing a new book called Screepy and the Egyptian Curse. I took it to school to edit. As I was reading in science my friends wondered what I was reading. We sat on the desks in a circle and passed the pages around. Then in Social Studies I got in trouble reading it. Then in Art one of my friends read the entire class period. Then I was reading the book in my math class. My math teacher didn't notice. The book just pulled me and my friends in, and none of us wanted to stop reading.
March 22, 2008 My mom went to a writers conference yesterday. She got two new books. She got Dragon Slippers, by Jessica Day George, and The 13th Reality: The Journal of Curious Letters, by James Dashner. I've started to read Dragon Slippers and my mom keeps telling me that I can't read ahead.
March 7, 2008 My mom is working hard on a new book. She has to get it done by the end of the month so she can work some more on the Brass Dragon Codex. I get to proofread all her stuff before she hands it over to R.D. Henham. Mom doesn't spell so well. Can you believe it? And she's an author. Which just proves you can do anything you want if you try hard enough at it (and have a daughter or someone else willing to go over your work). Computer spell checkers are great, but they won't help if you write flower instead of flour. If you can get your hands on one of the Advance Reader Copies of Red Dragon Codex, you'll find that mistake on page 6. My mom swears she fixed it before she gave the manuscript to Henham. LOL. You'll be glad to know it is correct in actual printed version. January 24, 2008 Today I got in trouble by my tutor (teacher) for using paper that I made for my mom instead of the scrolls we do our work on. He yelled so loud he got kicked out of the library for the day. I thought that was hilarious. January 21, 2008 My mom just finished reading a great book called The Golden Cord, by Paul Genesse. I guess she has an advance readers copy, because the book doesn't come out until May. No fair. Some people actually get a sneak preview of books before they even come out. So anyway, my mom says this book is about a boy named Drake Bloodstone who lives in a fantastic and deadly jungle where an evil dragon named Draglune plans to conquer the world. Drake has to leave the village and woman he loves to face the deadly dragon and his minions. Mom says the book is riveting. She couldn't put it down and didn't even make dinner for us or do the laundry until she finished it. Now she's done, I can get my hands on it. He he he! January 12, 2008 Today was my mom's big Red Dragon Codex book party. To set up it took me like a million times to run up and down the stairs at the Fitness Center where we had it, carrying all the stuff. It was lots of fun. We had an obstacle course with the three tests from the book. There was cake and ice cream and soda. My mom decorated one of the cakes with a big red dragon. I got very hyper and ran around like crazy. My cousin, Turquoise, drew some cool dragons that the kids could color. My mom sold tons of books, and we ran out before it was even over. We had drawings for little toy dragons and free copies of the books. I had lots and lots of fun. January 11, 2008 Today my mom came to my school and taught the whole sixth grade the 5 Simple Steps to Write Your Own Story. It was awesome. I'm not ready to write my own story yet, though. January 5, 2008 My mom got copies of the book from the publisher today. They look wonderful. :)(Besides the fact the papers look funny because of how we make the paper.) How we make the paper is first we make sure we have screens, cans that are still sealed, and towels. Second get a big tub and fill 3/4 the way full. Third we get the paper out of the recycle bin. (we never waste ANY paper here in the library.) Fourth we grind it till the paper is now bigger than 1/4 in. by 1/4 in. (For those in another world just use a blender it works a lot better and goes faster. We have to grind with a small rock a big rock. With the blender you have to put a little bit water in the blender or it'll ruin the blender.) Fifth dump the paper into the tub of water. Sixth get the screen (not a door or window screen those in a different world!) and dip it into the water and scoop up the paper. Let the water drain from the screen. Then put a towel on the table, then put the screen on the towels. Put 3 or 4 towels on top of the screen. (Don't freak out it won't ruin the paper.) Then with the can push hard while you role it over the towels. Next take the towels off the screen and from under the screen and carry them over to the tub of water and ring them till they're almost dry. From 'then put a towel on the table...' do this process 3 or 4 times. After you done that process 3 or 4 times take the screen and put around a fan, this will dry it, but you have to wait a couple days before you can take it away from the fan and get the paper off. Before you can make paper you have to ASK your PARENTS FIRST! Sincerely, Emerald December 13, 2007 Things are crazy here at the library. My mom is getting ready for the big publication party. It's going to be lots of fun. Here's the info.
